Man killed cutting tree

A man was found dead May 25, 2022, on his property near Jersey Mills, Pennsylvania, apparently after being struck by a tree he’d cut down.

Joseph Shoemaker, 66, of Abbottstown, Pa., was discovered by a friend who was staying at Shoemaker’s cabin.

The friend had arrived at the cabin late Tuesday night, May 24.

The kitchen light was on, but the friend went to bed, believing Shoemaker had already retired to his room for the evening.

When the friend got up early Wednesday morning, he went looking for Shoemaker, since he was not in the cabin.

Shoemaker was found trapped under the downed tree, and volunteer fire- fighters had to remove a giant log to free his body.

The last time anyone talked with Shoemaker was Sunday night, so investigators believe he died sometime Monday or Tuesday, according to a Williamsport Sun-Gazette report.
